Francesca Melandri in conversation with Géraldine Schwarz about Melandri’s novel »Kalte Füsse« (»Cold Feet« , will be published in Englisch in 2027)

Francesca Melandri lives in Rome and Berlin and is one of the most popular contemporary Italian authors. Her first novel, »Eva Sleeps«, brought her to the attention of a wide German-speaking readership. Her second novel, »Über Meereshöhe« was hailed by Italian critics as a masterpiece. Her third novel, »Alle, außer mir«, was chosen as the »favorite book« of independent booksellers in 2018; it went through numerous reprints and spent ten weeks on the SPIEGEL bestseller list. In 2024, »Kalte Füße« (»Piedi freddie«) was published to significant media attention.

For her novel »Kalte Füße« (»Cold Feet«), Francesca Melandri chose the form of a letter addressed to her late father. In light of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, she confronts her deceased father – who, as an Italian »Alpini« lieutenant during the Second World War, served in Mussolini’s fascist army alongside Nazi Germany – regarding his participation in the »Russian campaign« against the Soviet Union, a campaign that »was, in truth, largely a campaign in Ukraine.« He fought in many Ukrainian cities that are once again under fire today, though this time from the opposite side. Melandri emphasizes that she does not wish to provide simple answers; rather, she aims to encourage her readers to ask questions and to grapple with the ambivalences of history.

Géraldine Schwarz is a German-French journalist, author, and documentary filmmaker. She describes herself as a »convinced European.« In her recently published book, »Who We Were, Who We Are«, she guides us through more than two thousand years of European history—from its beginnings to the present day—demonstrating that by reflecting on our shared roots, we can find meaning in our present lives. Géraldine Schwarz advocates for a pragmatic culture of remembrance rooted in a sense of responsibility, one that allows us to purposefully learn from the past in ways that are relevant to the present.
